Ditch New Year’s Resolutions and Commit to Change

As we usher in a new year, the air is thick with resolutions – promises we make to ourselves, often forgotten as quickly as they are made. Here are some of my thoughts on why New Year’s resolutions tend to fail and what is a more profound approach: the power of commitment.

Ditch New Year Resolutions!

Let’s begin by bidding farewell to the conventional New Year’s resolutions that if you think about it, we’re socially conditioned to make to ring in the New Year. Instead, let’s embrace the idea of committing to change. Resolutions often lack the depth needed for sustained transformation because they’re really just “a firm decision to do or not to do something.” On the other hand, commitment involves a promise and pledge to oneself, even dedicating or obligating yourself to something or to do something.

So when it comes down to it, the difference is intention versus action. Resolutions are about what you will do, such as “I will go to the gym so I can lose weight.” Whereas commitment is “I’m going to lose weight by going to [insert gym] on [days] at [time] and I’m going to put it on my phone’s calendar to remind me it’s going to be part of my day so I can lose weight.” This sets the stage for a more profound and lasting journey towards self-improvement.

Commitment vs Resolutions: Secret to Lasting Change!

Let’s explore the secret behind why commitment outshines resolutions in the pursuit of sustained transformation. It’s actually very simple: aligning commitments with our core values becomes a game-changer. Unlike resolutions that may lose momentum, commitments rooted in fundamental beliefs unleash a robust and enduring motivation. This alignment creates a synergy ensuring unwavering determination even when faced with challenges. Think about the last time you accomplished a goal. How were you able to maintain it even when faced with obstacles? The secret to lasting change lies in our ability to intertwine commitments with our core values. For instance, if you value quality family time, then your goal of losing weight should tie into it like “I’m going to lose weight because I want to be able to play around with the kids and know I have to have the energy and stamina to do so.”

Commitment Serving a Larger Purpose

As we continue our exploration, let’s consider the broader mental health benefits that commitments can offer. Commitments, being enduring promises, contribute significantly to our overall well-being by providing a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Making commitments that align with our values becomes a roadmap for personal growth and self-discovery. It’s not merely about achieving a goal; it’s about the journey that unfolds as we strive towards it. Think about the last time you accomplished a goal, no matter how small it was. How did you feel? How did that impact your day? Your overall goal that the accomplishment was part of? This journey, characterized by our commitments, has the potential to positively impact our mental health.

Practical Tips: How to Make Meaningful Commitments

  • Reflect on Your Values: Before setting a commitment, take time to reflect on your core values. What truly matters to you? Aligning your commitment with your values ensures a deeper connection and motivation.
  • Set Realistic Goals: While it’s essential to dream big, setting realistic and achievable goals is crucial. This helps prevent feelings of being overwhelmed and boosts your confidence as you make progress.
  • Create a Plan: Develop a detailed plan outlining the steps you need to take to fulfill your commitment. Having a roadmap provides clarity and helps you stay on track when faced with challenges.
  • Establish Accountability: Share your commitment with a friend, family member, or mentor. You can even use an app or some other method of keeping yourself accountable. Having someone, or something, to hold you accountable adds an extra layer of motivation and support.

Commitment: The Key to Outlast New Year’s Resolutions!

Commitment’s power lies not only in its ability to foster lasting change but also in its timeless nature. Unlike resolutions being tied to the beginning of the year, commitments allow intentional promises at any time. This liberates us from the constraints of procrastination and forgetting, offering the freedom to initiate meaningful change whenever the moment is right.
